Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. on Thursday became the first player in the history of Major League Baseball to hit 30 home runs and steal 60 bases in a single season.
He blew past the requirements to join the so-called 30-30 club, with 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases.
He completed the feat with his 30th home run at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles Thursday night, after he and Maria Laborde got married just that morning.
Acuña, 25, faced off against fellow MVP contender Mookie Betts, who hit 38 home runs for the Dodgers this season. His landmark 30th home run, a grand slam, contributed to the Braves’ 8–7 victory over Los Angeles.
Acuña stole his 60th base, and his 61st, on Aug. 28, and his 62nd on Thursday. Previously, the most bases stolen in a season by a player who also hit 30 homers was 52, when Barry Bonds achieved in 1990. If Acuña can hit another 10 home runs this season, he will join the even more rarefied 40-40 club.
Thursday’s victory solidifies Atlanta’s top position in the MLB with a record of 88-45, far above the second-place Philadelphia Phillies at 74-59.
