Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has been suspended five games without pay after forcibly grabbing Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert around the neck during their game at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Tuesday, the NBA announced Wednesday.
Near the beginning of the first quarter, the altercation initially broke out between Warriors guard Klay Thompson and Minnesota forward Jaden McDaniels, who took swings and grabbed each other’s jerseys as their teammates rushed over. Gobert wrapped up Thompson, according to the NBA, and Green grabbed Gobert’s neck.
The NBA said Green was responsible for escalating an on-court altercation when he grabbed Gobert’s neck in an unsportsmanlike and dangerous manner.
The suspension was announced by Joe Dumars, NBA Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations. The NBA said the length of his suspension is based in part on Greens history of unsportsmanlike acts.
During the game on Tuesday, Thompson and McDaniels were each hit with technical fouls and ejected. Green was given a Flagrant Foul 2 and ejected.
The NBA said Wednesday that Thompson, McDaniels and Gobert were each fined $25,000 for their roles in the scuffle.
The Timberwolves defeated the Warriors 104–101. Green’s suspension will begin Thursday when the Warriors host the Oklahoma City Thunder.
