The NFL on Tuesday announced a $300,000 fine against Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper for throwing a drink at fans in Jacksonville on Sunday.
Tepper was captured on video tossing a drink through the window of the owner’s box at TIAA Field onto the Jacksonville Jaguars fans below. The incident happened near the end of Sunday’s game, which the Panthers lost 26–0. It was the Panther’s 14th loss of the season.
“All NFL personnel are expected to conduct themselves at all times in ways that respect our fans and favorably reflect on their team and the NFL,” the league said in a statement Tuesday.
“I am deeply passionate about this team and regret my behavior on Sunday,” Tepper, 66, said in a statement after the fine was announced. “I should have let NFL stadium security handle any issues that arose. I respect the NFLs code of conduct and accept the Leagues discipline for my behavior.”
It isn’t clear whether Tepper was reacting to something a fan did or said when he threw the drink. The incident came after rookie quarterback Bryce Young threw an interception.
Despite being 2–14, the Panthers won’t get the No. 1 overall pick in the draft after trading it to Chicago for the top pick used to select Young.
Tepper bought the Panthers from Jerry Richardson in 2018. He fired coach Frank Reich just 11 games into his first season.
