Saul Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin faced off against each other on Saturday night in Las Vegas after their first two fights were overshadowed by contentious scorecards. Although the scorecards may have indicated a closer contest than actually occurred, Alvarez left no room for doubt that he was the superior boxer. After the fight Alvarez hugged Golovkin and stated “Thank you so much, my friend. Thank you, Golovkin, we gave the fans three good fights,” On all three scorecards, Alvarez, 32, won six of the opening seven rounds, dominating the majority of the sparse exchanges that took place. Golovkin landed only 120 of the 521 punches he threw at the T-Mobile Arena in front of 19,519 spectators. Following his declaration that he wanted to finish the trilogy by stopping Golovkin, Alvarez acknowledged that his victory over Caleb Plant last autumn had caused a cartilage tear in his right wrist. Surgery is necessary, and the recuperation period could be up to 12 months.
