Former NHL player Adam Johnson died Saturday due to a freak accident on the ice during a game with his current Elite Ice Hockey League team in England.
Johnson, 29, collided with another player on the ice and suffered a cut to his neck that resulted in his death, according to his team, the Nottingham Panthers. The team played the Sheffield Steelers at the Utilita Arena Sheffield on Saturday. The game was halted and fans were asked to leave due to a major medical emergency.
The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night, the team said in a statement. The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time.
Everyone at the club including players, management and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam’s passing. Our thoughts are also with the fans and staff of both clubs, especially those who attended or were following the game, who will be devastated following today’s news.
Johnson played 13 games as a forward with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2018–19. The team said in a statement it joined the entire hockey world in mourning.

Born in Minnesota, Johnson played two seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. After leaving the NHL, he played in Sweden, then returned to North America to play in the American Hockey League, before landing in England.
